does anybody have any good drills for 6 /7 and ball getting /retention?

looking for drills for getting loose forwards down onto the ball and ball retention at the ground level.

Tony

Here is a simple drill you can use involving a lot of players at once.

We used to say "Tackle and Jackal" meaning that the tackler had to snaffle the ball away quickly.

Now the tackler has to be careful not to give away a penalty - see these Laws:

15.4 THE TACKLER

(a) When a player tackles an opponent and they both go to ground, the tackler must immediately release the tackled player. Sanction: Penalty kick

(b) The tackler must immediately get up or move away from the tackled player and from the ball at once. Sanction: Penalty kick

(c) The tackler must get up before playing the ball and then may play the ball from any direction. Sanction: Penalty kick

I hope this helps - there are more drills in our Drills section under "Rucking"

Description:

Player 1 runs out with ball but player 2 has stepped up to meet them halfway.

Player 1 drives into player 2 - goes two steps before then going to ground.

Player 2 steps over the player on the ground, picks up the ball and runs on to be met by player 3 who takes the next contact.

Repeat.

Coaching Points:

Pick up the ball with two hands.
Pick up in a flowing motion, do not stop.
Look where you place your feet.
Change lead shoulders between left and right.
